Day 1: My Flight, Part I

Well, the journey begins. And it started on a hazardous note. Waking up with a bit of a hangover, I went to perform my regular morning routine. Unfortunately, it was cut short by a nasty turn of events. As I was washing my left lens, it snapped in two. Of all the times…

So this put me in a pretty foul mood, but the situation was luckily resolved by my mother thinking to call my optometrist. Being the nice guy he is, he gave me a couple of temporary lenses to use for the first few days until he could courier a proper one to my Belgium host.

On another note, our (Dal and I) car broke down yesterday. The fates are conspiring against my travel.

Anyway, after solving the problem of the broken lens, and a hearty meal from McD’s, I eventually set out for Auckland Airport. A fairly uneventful car ride later, I arrived at the airport. We (myself, Mum and Dad) then went up to the viewing platform and had a dinner at the bar. As I mentioned previously, I had a bit of a hangover, and at this point my stomach was doing its ‘superheating slow cook’ thing. This caused me to have a sore stomach for the next few hours. Perhaps it was nerves too, but I had no fears of flying.

After dinner, I checked in and hung around some more. Had a coffee. Nothing particularly exciting. After a photo with the folks, I entered the department gate. After some more waiting I was on my flight.

The aeroplane was actually quite spacious. I could stand up fully and there was adequate seat spacing for my legs. What’s better is that the two seats to my left (I was on a left-side aisle seat) were unoccupied, allowing me to stretch out. More waiting, and then I was taking off to the tune of AC/DC (the music selection wasn’t much more metal than this).

The movie selection was quite good. I intend to watch the following movies: The Hangover, Terminator Salvation, Burn After Reading, Angels And Demons, X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

So far, the chicken dinner was pretty good. Tasty enough, I guess.
